Koror, Palau – The FBL All Star weekend was held last Sunday at the Palau National Gym in celebration of the 113th Philippine Indepedence in cooperation with Philippine Embassy and The Filipino Commumity in Palau.

Boy Gopez of Team Spoilers won the MVP award for the Masters team on All Star Weekend.

The event started with the skills challenge and 3-point shoot out contest, followed by the Rookie-Sophomore game, Masters vs. Juniors and the main event — All Star team 1 against All Star team 2.

In the skills challenge, team Spoilers field in Coco Gonzales and Aries Echanova to represent the team. However, both players are suffering minor injuries that affected their performance.

Junie Samantina of the PNQ Rams won the skills challenge, clocking in the fastest time to complete the challenge at 12.3 seconds. Despite being injured, Gonzales placed second in the said event with a time of 13.1 seconds. Echanova failed to qualify in the final round.

The Spoilers picked Michael Bombita and Marvic Ngchar for the 3-point shoot-out but sadly both of them did not make it to the next round making four and five 3-pointers respectively.

PJ Esguerra of Aloha Maid Choppers won the event hitting nine from beyond the arc.

Things looked bleaked for the Spoilers team until the main games took place.

Mark Pagayanan displayed his inside moves and dominating rebounds helping the Rookie team to edge the Sophomore squad 78-74. Michael Garcia had a great all-around game for the Sophomore’s in a losing cause.

However, Mark Louie Lofranco of Aloha Maid Choppers won the MVP for the rookie-Sophomore game.

The Masters squad defeated the Juniors in dominating fashion 109-80 wherein the Spoilers very own Boy Gopez won MVP honors scoring 20 points for the Masters team. Sarry Maata of team Spoilers also played for the Junior team.

Koror Palau – Riding high on back-to-back wins and a revamped roster, the Spoilers started the game well enough and led 25-18 after the first quarter.

The Spoilers featured four new players against Surangel, Mark Pagayanan and George Bernardo bolstered the team’s frontcourt and Michael Bombita and Coco Gonzalez added depth to an already crowded backcourt.

Surangel and Sons tried to play physical to get back in game and perhaps frustrate some of the Spoilers’ players but it back fired.

Some timely baskets from Arnold Undicimo, Eric Manio and Deloy Pingot kept the game interesting. However, the Spoilers proved to be a tough customer and ended the first half leading 48-35 behind Gonzales and Bombita’s 1-2 punch.

The trend continued in the third period as the Spoilers’ lead ballooned to 20 points behind Gonzales’ play making ability, Bombita’s 3-point shooting, and team’s overall energetic play.

Koror Palau – After winning their first game against the Slashers last Sunday, the Spoilers go up against the Hanpa Cardinals looking for a second straight victory.

They opened the game strong leading 20-10 after the first quarter.

Nonetheless, the Cardinals did not go down that easily.

Using their inside game, the Cardinals were able to cut the lead to 25-23 in second quarter but a strong finish before half time by Spoilers restored their lead to 38-33 at half time.

In the second half, the Hanpa Cardinals continued to lean on their strength and that is to pound it on the inside. Because of their lack a legitimate center, Felix Masaganda fouled out with 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and the Spoilers were already in the penalty. A steal and a layup by Quito  closed the gap to 54-51.
