Koror, Palau – Championship games were supposed to be a  close fight.

With the top two teams  battling for the coveted crown, the games are expected to be exciting and thrilling, but apparently not in this series.

The Spoilers showed the defending champion Western Union team that they were clearly the better team and are head and shoulders above the rest.

During the past two seasons, Western Union was the best and were hailed back-to-back champs.

However, the moment Team Spoilers decided to re-join the FBA League, there was no denying that the Spoilers came back to bring back their glory days.

In their Best-of-3 series format, the Spoilers dominated Western Union winning Game 1, 101-68 and then completed the series sweep to clinch the title by routing Western Union 117-93 in Game 2.

Indeed a new era has just began.

Aries Echanova was named Rookie of the Year and season MVP, Michael Bombita won Finals MVP honors and was named Best Forward, while Coco Gonzales was awarded the sportsmanship award and Best Guard.

All three players were also named to the Mythical Team together with Western Union’s Erwin Senadre and Emerson Patenia.

Western Union started the game out strong going on a 5-0 run in the opening minutes but it was short lived.

Michael Bombita went on a personal 7-0 run to put the Spoilers on top 7-5, a lead that his team would never relinquished.

Spoilers’ big man Mark Pagayanan was on early foul trouble but once the Spoilers pushed the button, Western Union didn’t know what hit them and found themselves trailing 36-21 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Spoilers continued to step on the gas and broke the game wide open behind the scoring trio of Bombita, Aries Echanova and Coco Gonzales.

Team Spoilers held a 64-37 lead at half time off a last second put back by Joel Nacionales causing some fans to leave the gym sensing that the game might end up with another blowout victory by the Spoliers.

Koror, Palau – The FBL All Star weekend was held last Sunday at the Palau National Gym in celebration of the 113th Philippine Indepedence in cooperation with Philippine Embassy and The Filipino Commumity in Palau.

Boy Gopez of Team Spoilers won the MVP award for the Masters team on All Star Weekend.

The event started with the skills challenge and 3-point shoot out contest, followed by the Rookie-Sophomore game, Masters vs. Juniors and the main event — All Star team 1 against All Star team 2.

In the skills challenge, team Spoilers field in Coco Gonzales and Aries Echanova to represent the team. However, both players are suffering minor injuries that affected their performance.

Junie Samantina of the PNQ Rams won the skills challenge, clocking in the fastest time to complete the challenge at 12.3 seconds. Despite being injured, Gonzales placed second in the said event with a time of 13.1 seconds. Echanova failed to qualify in the final round.

The Spoilers picked Michael Bombita and Marvic Ngchar for the 3-point shoot-out but sadly both of them did not make it to the next round making four and five 3-pointers respectively.

PJ Esguerra of Aloha Maid Choppers won the event hitting nine from beyond the arc.

Things looked bleaked for the Spoilers team until the main games took place.

Mark Pagayanan displayed his inside moves and dominating rebounds helping the Rookie team to edge the Sophomore squad 78-74. Michael Garcia had a great all-around game for the Sophomore’s in a losing cause.

However, Mark Louie Lofranco of Aloha Maid Choppers won the MVP for the rookie-Sophomore game.

The Masters squad defeated the Juniors in dominating fashion 109-80 wherein the Spoilers very own Boy Gopez won MVP honors scoring 20 points for the Masters team. Sarry Maata of team Spoilers also played for the Junior team.

Koror Palau – After winning their first game against the Slashers last Sunday, the Spoilers go up against the Hanpa Cardinals looking for a second straight victory.

They opened the game strong leading 20-10 after the first quarter.

Nonetheless, the Cardinals did not go down that easily.

Using their inside game, the Cardinals were able to cut the lead to 25-23 in second quarter but a strong finish before half time by Spoilers restored their lead to 38-33 at half time.

In the second half, the Hanpa Cardinals continued to lean on their strength and that is to pound it on the inside. Because of their lack a legitimate center, Felix Masaganda fouled out with 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and the Spoilers were already in the penalty. A steal and a layup by Quito  closed the gap to 54-51.

A Day to be Thankful!

On April 17, the Palau Badminton Association celebrated the recently concluded tournament with a beach party.  It was a day filled with fun and excitement and moment of bonding for families and friends.

However, the event was marred by an unexpected incident; we almost lost one of our good friend RR. Thankfully we have a nurse and a doctor around. It’s not a stretch to say that he was saved by the immediate response from some of our Filipino friends.

I applaud them for their heroism and determination.

To RR, get well soon! May GOD BLESS YOU and your family. It’s only appropriate that the first words that came out from you’re mouth after regaining consciousness was “THANK GOD!”.

Thank GOD indeed for that blessed day, we saved a life and it felt good!

Now back to some fun… Here is a photo of my Wife and I.San Francisco? Err...

Behind us is the Golden Gate of San Francisco California… Err Palau’s KB Bridge pala! Hahaha!

I hope you guys enjoyed this first post. I’ll try to make a post once a while from here on out! Thanks!
